I love these moments when juxtaposition smacks you in the face. At this Thai-Russian wedding in May 2009 in San Bruno, CA, I couldn’t help but smile when one of the presiding monks of the ceremony lifted his huge digital camera to capture a moment in the crowd. Interesting how at one point the monks collected various necessities from the bride’s family — toilet paper, snacks, toiletries — yet tinkered with cameras and cell phones throughout the ceremony.

The waterfront of Sausalito reminds me of two (very different) places I love: Pacific Grove in Monterey, CA, and some of the coastal towns along the French Riviera. Tourists flock to these places, but they manage to preserve small-town charm. I’d like to live along the water when I’m older: to jog along the ocean, to explore tidepools each day, to listen to the birds and waves. You know, simplicity. Of course, this simplicity comes with a beachfront property price tag.

My trip to Tokyo for New Year’s is up in the air. Wondering if I will make it work, as I have Shinjuku on the brain. The last (and only time) I was in Japan was three years ago; I found pleasure in the constant juxtaposition: a quiet temple, and then a loud, in-your-face electronics shop in Electric Town. A crazy, colorful cozplay girl in Harajuku, and then an elegant, demure woman in traditional Japanese dress at Meiji Shrine.
